Human-Animal Science (HAS) is an educational initiative dedicated to understanding and improving animal behavior. Founded in Portugal in 2003 and has been based and fully integrated since 2016 in Denmark in collaboration with etologi.dk dedicated to advancing animal behavior science through practical fieldwork and rigorous research.
Our collaboration with etologi.dk involves animal training & consulting and conducting on-field research in real-world scenarios, directly and effectively addressing the daily challenges of owners and professionals.
Registered in Denmark under codes 85.59.00 for Other Teaching and 72.19.00 for Research and Development in Natural Sciences and Engineering, HAS is committed to unbiased, high-standard research, consulting, and education. Our founder’s teaching accreditation by the European Association for Higher Education Advancement (EAHEA) underscores our dedication to academic rigor and independence.
HAS (Human-Animal Science) comprises three central departments:
Central to HAS is the democratization of knowledge. We ensure high-quality education is accessible and affordable, fostering an inclusive learning environment. Regardless of expertise or financial background, everyone can contribute to and benefit from our community’s collective wisdom. HAS shares insights and breakthroughs through bespoke services, scholarly publications, pro-bono initiatives, and more, reaching a diverse audience. Strategic collaborations with individuals and institutions enhance our impact, uniting a community passionate about knowledge.
HAS combines practical fieldwork with rigorous research to advance the science of animal training and behavior modification. With over two decades of hands-on experience, we ensure our work is grounded in real-world applications while maintaining the highest standards of integrity and objectivity. We foster a culture of excellence and encourage open, respectful exchanges as the foundation of our community. As an independent entity, we deliberately distance ourselves from personal or commercial influences that could tarnish our quest for unadulterated knowledge.
Our influence extends beyond academia, engaging professionals, animal owners, and enthusiasts. We are committed to providing accessible and affordable resources to a global audience. Your support helps maintain our independence and promotes knowledge democratization.

Roberto Barata is a professional with extensive experience working with various animal species, especially dogs, since 2003. His expertise in animal behavior and modification is scientifically grounded and actively applied, enabling him to address real-world challenges and contribute to ongoing development. His preference for hands-on experiences and direct engagement with practical, realistic situations drives his work and dedication in the field.
Living in Denmark, Roberto collaborates with etologi.dk. He offers a spectrum of services, including consultation, independent research, and teaching both online and on-campus courses in anthrozoology and animal behavior modification. His contributions extend globally, having authored content for animal professionals and engaged in pro bono work and research for numerous institutions.
In 2008, he founded Human-Animal Science, where he has been pioneering anthrozoological models that integrate theory, practice, and empirical evidence in animal training. His pragmatic approach provides critical thinking tools and fresh perspectives for animal behavior modification and has significant educational implications for global initiatives.
Roberto’s work philosophy is underpinned by a commitment to natural communication, interspecies understanding, and respect for each species’ intrinsic nature. He emphasizes critical thinking and questioning and steers clear of harmful or coercive communication, reflecting his ethical and technical standards.
He remains at the forefront of his field through rigorous study, extensive research, valuable practical experience, and a dedication to eschewing mindless conformity. He upholds integrity by eliminating personal biases and compromised funding sources, and he champions incorporating diverse perspectives and critical thought in his educational endeavors. His focus is steadfast on independent research and hands-on work, driven by an unyielding quest for knowledge and a dedication to disseminating insightful analyses.
He is a vocal critic of scientific biases in animal training studies and urges professionals to engage in field-based research and empirically substantiate their theories actively. His work offers varied viewpoints, promotes a practice-based approach to animal behavior modification, and highlights the educational importance of evidence-based practices for worldwide initiatives.
Roberto’s life mission is to honor silence and individuals, prioritize simplicity and precision in actions, and consciously avoid squandering precious time and energy on trivial matters.
Roberto Barata graduated from Ethology Institute Cambridge as CAAE (Certified in Advanced Applied Ethology) in 2016.
From the first moment, I met Roberto, I identified in him some of the unique characteristics that distinguish the competent from the excellent student. It was quite evident that he had a good head and flair for animal training. However, what struck me most were his above-average determination and dedication to learning.
Roberto took one course at the time even having to leave his country, traveling a long way, to complete his mandatory practical training and proficiency verifications. All that, he did without complaint, and with the same eager and determination, he showed on his very first day at the Institute.
I was, personally, especially pleased the day he graduated as CAAE. The EIC had one more high-quality graduate and the animal training world one more excellent trainer and instructor.
It has, indeed, been a privilege to have been Roberto’s tutor. I’ve been fortunate to have had a fair number of exceptional students throughout my long 30+ years career. Among them, a dozen or so stand head and shoulders above all others; Roberto is one of them.
Portugal and the Lusophone community are fortunate to have Roberto Barata. With him, animals, animal trainers, and owners are in good hands.
